Trombone Ensemble Series

trombone ensemble series

Back in the 80's when I was the orchestra director at First Baptist Church Jacksonville, I wanted to help my trombone section have a more focused sound and play better in tune. I ordered some Bach chorales and asked the trombone players if they'd be willing to come in an hour early on rehearsal night for some ensemble practice. They were all willing to do that, so we began to meet on a weekly basis. They really enjoyed it!

After about two months, I told them that I thought we didn't need to meet anymore, but they really wanted to keep it up. The trombone section grew a little to where we had 5 players with a good bass trombone player, so I began to start writing some trombone ensembles for 5 trombone parts with piano. Pretty soon we began to feature the trombone ensemble in our worship service every couple of months.

After more time passed, we had 10 trombone players, so it was a double quintet. Over a period of years, I've created 15 trombone ensembles based on classic Gospel hymns. Those arrangements for 5 trombones are still being sold, and trombone players everywhere have told me they're a lot of fun to play!
